The wait is almost over! After last year’s triumphant NEoN 10 brought the best of cutting edge digital art, ideas and technology to Dundee, the team is back to unleash an even bigger, better programme than before. The city will be transformed into a digital playground with more events, more talks and more ideas – all designed to push back the boundaries of new media. Over the next few days these NEoN transmissions will focus on different aspects of the festival, as the packed programme is just too huge to sum up in one post! So without further ado, lets have a look at what the first weekend holds.

The NEoN Pop-Up Shop is brand new for NEoN 11. Open from 12pm-5pm every day during NEoN it will be a base to keep people informed with what’s happening in the city, provide programmes, and give people the chance to buy some very unique and super-limited edition merchandise. Among other things there will be internationally-renowned animator Akinori Oishi’s vinyl toy of his Law Hill character and selection of awesome new t-shirts from Cotton Foundry. The shop is based in Chamber East on Panmure Street so come in and say hello to the team!

Geocaching is a treasure hunt for the sat-nav generation and NEoN have set up an exciting competition that will run throughout the festival week. There are some big prizes on offer but be warned – your best sleuthing skills will be needed as some of the caches are intended to puzzle and mystify!

Sunday 6th November is the NEoN fun day – an afternoon of digital fun for the whole family at the Hannah Maclure Centre from 12pm-2.30. There you will get the chance to make a movie or record a song, create a life-sized character or manipulate visuals with your dance moves. As well as all of these activities the micro-cinema will be showing ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ which according to the New Yorker magazine is ‘one of the loveliest children’s films ever made…’ as well as a selection of European animated shorts. More information about all these activities and how to book are in the NEoN programme.

So, have a great first weekend of NEoN 11, and await the next transmission where we’ll be looking at the some of the artists exhibiting at this years festival…….
