Optical Toys & Perception = Magic!

, at

Who doesn’t love optical illusions?

We thought so! Thursday 17th Nov sees an interesting talk by Nicholas Wade, Professor of Psychology from the University of Dundee, who will discuss that fuzzy interesting space, where visual science meets visual art.

We’ve heard he’s rather very good and that it will be a lively chat, complete with interactive elements to test your own visual perception skills – we’re loving the sound of this already!

With a whizz through colour theory and early Victorian optical toys, Nicholas will also look at contemporary artists who apply scienctific ‘theory’ to their work, such as Calulm Colvin. This talk fits rather neatly into DCA’s current exhibition by Torsten Lauschman: Startle Reaction.

If you’ve not seen the exhibition yet, you should do, it’s full of great light projections, optical tricks,Victorian light show methods and early cinematography combined with 21st century technology, with a self-playing pianola and real snow showers at the centre of the gallery, yes, snow. The exhibition runs until 8th January 2012.

Hear Nicholas bring visual optics to life!
