Dundee-based Kirsty Maguire Architect (KMA) Limited has been shortlisted for the Bespoke Project Design Category of the UK Passivhaus Awards 2014. KMA Ltd is one of 3 shortlisted entrants in this category and the only Scottish architecture practice to be nominated in any of the awards.

The aim of the UK Passivhaus Awards 2014 is to promote and encourage drive and enthusiasm for the Passivhaus standard – using minimal energy for heating and cooling, by showing that Passivhaus buildings can showcase excellent architecture and design, and that UK teams can deliver cost savings and system innovations whilst still ensuring good occupant health and well-being.

The project chosen for the shortlist of the awards is a new farmhouse in Ayrshire, with views over the glittering sea, Ailsa Craig and Arran, this is the first and currently, only Passivhaus certified building in Ayrshire. The home is comfortable, low maintenance, light filled and warm and takes advantage of the stunning views from the site, as well as minimising fuel bills.

Kirsty Maguire, principal architect for the project, said, “This is the first Passivhaus in Ayrshire. It is inspired by the local traditional  haysheds; balancing views, sunlight, and low maintenance, the design reflects the forms & colours of the landscape. Built by local contractors Hope Homes and using Scottish products where possible it is a home grown house.”

The annual heating bill for the 3 bedroom home is estimated to be around only £250 based on using solely electricity; costs will be further reduced by using alternative energy sources. A small wood burning stove and an air source heat pump keep it toasty all year round.

The owners said, “We are gobsmacked at how the house holds the heat – we keep looking to see what we’ve left turned on but there isn’t anything – and the fresh air is great.”

The winners of the UK Passivhaus Trust Awards 2014 will be announced during the Trust’s 4th anniversary celebration on 1st July at the Museum of London.

The project was taken on by Kirsty Maguire Architect Ltd at the start of the Building Warrant stage. The design up to planning stage was carried out by another practice, with Kirsty Maguire as the project architect.
