Pop-up Design Cafe

Creative Dundee is hosting the city’s first Pop-up Design Cafe in partnership with Avery & Co. on Friday 30th January as part of a weekend of celebrations to launch Dundee’s UNESCO City of Design status. Pop in, hear and meet the people who are pushing boundaries with design.

What does design mean to you? What would you like to see Dundee do in future as a UNESCO City of Design? Come and share your ideas and thoughts for the future at the pop-up design cafe.

Chat to Dundee’s designers

There are many faces who make up Dundee’s design community, throughout the afternoon we’ll be hearing brief insights from just a few about their experiences of design and ambitions for the city.

  • Kirsty Maguire is an Architect specialising in eco design and low energy Passivhaus buildings.
  • Lyall Bruce is a Graphic Illustrator designing for print and screen. He is passionate about identity and character.
  • Space Budgie is an independent Game Studio, creators of 9.03m and Glitchspace.
  • Joanne MacFadyen is a Jeweller who set up Tea Green Events to showcase the wealth of creative talents in Scotland.

Contribute to the city’s future vision

Dotted around the cafe you will find plenty of opportunities to share your thoughts, reflections and ideas on design in the city.

Put forward what you’d like to do yourself and outline your ambitions for the future of Dundee and its citizens as a UNESCO City of Design.

Design in a new domain

Kicking us off at 2.30pm, Professor Mike Press, Chair of Design Policy at DJCAD will lead a conversation with a group of innovative designers who are bringing design to new areas – in fields like social services, the creative economy and service design.

  • Jon Gill is a Design Communicator focused on public and community services.
  • Jo Blecher is a Jeweller involved in V&A Dundee’s first major show ‘Design in Motion’
  • Karen Lyttle is an Interior Designer now working in service design.

Hear how design-led practice is influencing their fields of work and how Dundee can best harness the power of design to renew itself in the coming years.

Two international experts in design and craft will come to University of Dundee on to run a special free event focusing on creativity, design and sustainable futures. The afternoon workshop event must be booked in advance.
