In 2014, DJCAD hosted Make:Shift:Do Dundee, and welcomed over 100 people from as far afield as Dumfries for a Salon event, a new exhibition and hands-on workshops.  Leading Scottish designers and researchers shared their processes, projects and experiences, and 40 people had the chance to try out using smart materials, 3D printing, laser cutting and Arduino.

This year DJCAD is once again inviting you to try your hand at using new materials and technologies.  They have four public workshops designed to introduce you to some of the basics, and let you explore your creative potential!

Workshops are £4 per person, introductory sessions, open to over 16s only, and are for makers, tinkerers, educators, and people who just want to explore new forms of making!

When: Friday 23rd October

Where: Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, Matthew Building, Perth Road, Dundee, DD1 4HT

Four workshops: (Please Note: Introduction to Smart Materials and Light Up! run concurrently in the morning.  3DPrinting and Creative Electronics run concurrently in the afternoon).

Introduction to Smart Materials in Jewellery and Textiles – 10am-12pm (arrive 9.45am) – £4

Smart materials, such as colour changing pigments can be used to bring an interactive, responsive dimension to fabrics, papers and other materials. Join Smart jewellery designers Beth and Kathy, to explore the exciting design potential that these materials offer for jewellery and textile design. Try using colour-changing dyes, conductive yarns, resin and silicone to make mini swatches and bold, playful forms that respond to heat, light and moisture.

Light Up! – 10am-12pm (arrive 9.45am) £4

Join award winning designer-maker and last year’s joint speaker at Make Shift Craft Council Conference, Sarah Taylor and learn how to work with optical fibres. Sarah will show you ways of treating the fibres to emit different qualities of light. The workshop will allow you to test, explore and make your own Light-Up samples using simple textile and construction techniques. There will be a selection of yarns and materials to try out. Please feel free to bring along your own crochet hooks and knitting needles!

Introduction to 3D Printing – 2 – 4pm (arrive 1.45) – £4

Join the team at DJCAD Make to explore the makerspace and test out the capabilities of 3D printing technology.  Rob will guide you through you the process of creating 3D models, and show you how to transport digital design files to get them ready for 3D printing.  See the results in action!

Creative Electronics: Bare Conductive –  2 – 4pm (arrive 1.45) – £4

Fresh from showing their work at last year’s Make:Shift:Do Dundee, and the  Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire, join members of the team behind ‘FoldiBook’, an interactive learning book for children. This workshop will blend design and technology, allowing you to test out conductive paint to create graphical circuits and sensors.  Bare Conductive paints and hardware are great, accessible prototyping tools for designers, engineers, students, educators and professionals alike, and are full of creative opportunity.
