Waterstones Dundee’s new community café will launch with a magical party as the bookshop joins thousands of others around the world on Sunday 31st July to celebrate the publication of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child- Parts I and II, the eighth instalment in the bestselling Harry Potter series.

The book shop’s new café champions the best local produce and will host an active community events programme including reading groups, book events, quiz nights, knitting afternoons, gamers evenings, parent and toddler get-togethers and much more.

The magical celebrations will begin at Waterstones Dundee at the stroke of midnight (00.00am) Sunday 31st July when the bookshop will open its doors for fans keen to be amongst the first in the country to get their hands on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, staying open until 1am. The party will continue when the bookshop reopens at 10.30am on Sunday 31st with a wizard day of games, quizzes, fancy dress, snacks and refreshments.

Waterstones are proud to be sourcing much of the café menu from independent producers and family-run businesses local to Dundee and the surrounding area. Cakes are supplied daily from Jessie’s Kitchen in Broughty Ferry, sandwich supplies and chilled goods come from Fife Creamery in Kirkcaldy and local craft baker and confectioner, J M Bakery are supplying freshly baked bread, pastries, scones and Arbroath Smokie Quiche. Families are welcome at the café and the menu includes child-friendly lunchboxes and J M Bakery’s sponge cones. The café will offer triple certified coffee from Glasgow based company, Matthew Algie – approved by the Fairtrade Foundation, Rainforest Alliance and Organic Food Federation.

The café refurbishment has enhanced the bookshop’s attractive interior with the café now home to an eclectic mix of furniture from contemporary designer to traditional Windsor chairs, accompanied by local art and photography displays on the walls.  New facilities at the Commercial Street bookshop include a baby changing station and disabled toilet on the ground floor, and charging points for mobile phones and laptops dotted around the café.

Bookshop Manager Kevin Breen says “We open our new café with a great sense of pride. Its been a joy researching the menu and sourcing the furniture. We are keen to offer our customers the very best local food and show our support for independent producers. We see the café as a community hub, hosting a wide-range of events from book groups to knitting circles, the programme driven by the many and varied interests of our customers. This weekend’s launch party offers the perfect opportunity for us to share our new café with our customers and we hope that as many people as possible will come and join us this weekend.”
