Tin Roof Arts Collective are delighted to announce the opening of their newest venture, Dundee Ceramics Workshop on Saturday 10 December 2016 at 6pm in their new premises. The creative collective, founded in 2010 by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design graduates, were previously based on Ure Street in a large industrial warehouse. Over the past 6 years, Tin Roof have provided studio space for nearly 100 artists, a wood workshop and two exhibition spaces.
In July this year, the volunteer-run charity had to vacate their premises due to unforeseen circumstances however before discovering this news, the collective successfully gained funding from Creative Scotland to set up a ceramics facilities within their building after being gifted two kilns from a local school.
With the funding and kilns ready for the development of a ceramics facility, Tin Roof started looking for a new home. Upon finding a small unit close to WASPS artist studios, the group made the decision to set up the ceramics facilities as a new part of Tin Roof’s wider activity in Dundee.
Dundee Ceramics Workshop will offer its members and the public a wide range of facilities, from classes and workshops for all abilities, to kiln hire and working space. Since securing funds from the Dundee Futures Fund through business support from the Dundee Social Enterprise Network, the collective have also been able to hire their very first employee, the ceramics artist Kevin Andrew Morris, in the position of workshop technician. In addition to this, with the support of Adopt-anintern, they have also been able to hire a studio assistant for the project.
Joanna Helfer, founder of Tin Roof explained, “Losing our building back in June came as a huge blow to Tin Roof, but we were determined to keep going and keep providing for the creative community of Dundee. We know a lot of people are interested in ceramics at the moment and we’ve had a lot of people coming to us over the past few years asking if we can run classes and provide access to kilns, so we are really happy to finally be able to offer this to artists and the wider community of Dundee.”
Dundee based illustrator Stephanie Liddle, the designer behind the ceramic homeware brand Homebody Makes, who recently became involved with the organisation said, “The Dundee Ceramics Workshop is a super exciting opportunity for makers across the city to come together and explore and experiment with ceramics. We’ve got some really exciting projects lined up for the new year and I’m looking forward to being part of the collective and seeing it develop as our membership grows over the coming months.”
The opening event will be at the collective’s new premises from 6 – 9pm, offering a chance to sign up for membership and classes in the new year along with information about their programme of talks and workshops over some nibbles and mulled wine.
