Dundee Ceramics Workshop: Get Involved This Summer

Dundee Ceramics Workshop has been a great presence in Dundee since it was set up in 2016, providing workshop facilities, classes, kiln hire, and 1-to-1 tuition for ceramic artists and enthusiasts. They have also been writing up some blog posts about the committee members, which are interesting, in some ways poetic and definitely worth a read!

Recently they have announced a few dates for events and workshops this summer which will suit different levels of interest and skill, check it out:

 

Claytime!

Claytime! is our regular Thursday night ‘after-work club’ sessions which let you play and experiment with clay, learn a new skill, and socialise.

Ceramic Jewellery
Thursday 20th July, 6pm – 8pm, £25.00 (£22.50 DCW Members)

Working with porcelain clay, we’ll be using hand-building techniques to create sculptural and wearable pieces of ceramic jewellery. Lead by designer/maker Steph Liddle and recent jewellery graduate Hannah George, we’ll harness the delicate and translucent nature of porcelain to make the ceramic components of your jewellery, ready to be fired and glazed ready for collection if a few weeks time.

Ornate Paperweights

Thursday 3rd August, 6pm – 8pm, £25.00 (£22.50 DCW Members)
This week’s Claytime! session will explore sculptural techniques to create an ornamental paperweight. Lead by artist/maker Fiona McCubbin, we will focus on ornate forms. Over the course of the evening Fiona will demonstrate techniques to create a functional ornament that can be later decorated at a future Claytime! session.

Mid-Century Vase

Thursday 17th August, 6pm – 8pm, £25.00 (£22.50 DCW Members)

This Claytime! session will focus on slab building to create a mid-century inspired vase. Lead by designer/maker Steph Liddle, we’ll focus on minimal shapes and forms to create a graphic vase inspired by mid-century designers. Over the course of the evening Steph will show you how to prepare your slabs and build your vase, ready to be fired and glazed ready for collection in a few weeks time.

Parent and Child Sessions
Join us over the summer holidays to explore clay together!

 Coiled and Painted Bowls

Thursday 13th July, 1pm – 3pm, £25.00 (1 adult, 1 child) – additional child £10.00

Age 8+

Lead by artist Rosemary Head, we’ll explore coiling techniques to create your own unique bowls and dishes. Rosemary will show you how to prepare your coils and build your bowl which can be painted and decorated, ready to be fired and glazed ready for collection in a few weeks time.

Ceramic Jewellery

Thursday 27th July, 1pm – 3pm, £25.00 (1 adult, 1 child) – additional child £10.00

Age 8+

Making Mythical Creatures

Thursday 10th August, 1pm – 3pm, £25.00 (1 adult, 1 child) – additional child £10.00

Age 5+

Make your own mythical monster! Lead by artist Rosemary Head, we’ll explore hand-building techniques to make mythical creatures out of clay which can be painted and decorated, ready to be fired and glazed ready for collection in a few weeks time.

Each session costs £25.00 for 1 adult and 1 child, additional children can be brought along for an extra £10.00 (maximum 2 children per adult). This included all tuition time, materials and firing costs. Plus you get to keep what you make!

Events and Drop-Ins

Summer Wheel Throwing for Two
Wednesdays during June, July and August, £30.00 for 2 people
Come along and join us in our workshop to have a shot on the pottery wheel to throw and decorate your own pot over 2 sessions. Each session lasts for 1 hour and includes approx. 15 minutes tuition time followed by 45 minutes of practise. In the first session we’ll show you how to centre your clay and throw a pot, we’ll then bisque fire your piece ready for your 2nd session a couple of weeks later where you can come back and decorate and glaze your creation ready for collection.
