LOLCATS – Rachel Macleanz

Artist Rachel Maclean has previously described her work as hyper-glowing, artificially saturated visions that are both nauseatingly positive and cheerfully grotesque. Her incredible new exhibition, LOLCATS runs at GENERATORprojects from 6th October – 28th October 2012 – one not to be missed!

If you’ve not come across the term Lolcats before, then here’s the quick low down – users post photos of cats alongside brief, misspelled texts, creating an element of humour and LOL (laugh out loud). Lolcats.com was registered in 2006, and I Can Has Cheezburger? (ICHC for short) is a weblog featuring lolcats, and Ben Huh, CEO of The Cheezburger Network, explains: “Cats have very expressive facial and body expressions, so they are a perfect canvas for human emotion, which makes them awesome for captioning and anthropomorphisation.” There are a lot of very expressive cats in this exhibition.

Rachel is a Glasgow based artist and graduate of Edinburgh College of Art. In her recent videos such as ‘Over The Rainbow’, Rachel create synthetic spaces in which Katy Perry discuses teeth whitening with an aristocratic cat, a decapitated diva dances to hip pop and a pastel blue dog sings for The Queen. Check out one of her videos for a very different and welcome take on a certain popular TV show here.
