Poorboy Theatre Company is organising a sponsored Firewalk – a group of 40 willing and able brave souls who will walk across burning embers, at dusk, in the heart of the Scottish countryside, cheered on by a piper and drummer and dozens of other participants for a good cause.

Firewalking is an ancient tradition and Lendrick Lodge in Callander is the main training centre for those in UK who organize and lead firewalks. We’re in excellent hands and Firewalking with one of the safest organizations in the UK.

And it’s all in a good cause – Poorboy’s show ‘Pirates & Mermaids’ is an international story set in Scotland and New York. It’s had  great responses from preview audiences in both countries – people laugh a lot, sometimes get a little sniffly and more than a few have phoned their loved ones right after it. It’s a real experience. It’s not just a play. It’s the kind of show that makes people really think about themselves, their lives and who they love. Their work always strives to move people emotionally, to connect people and to have audiences feel like a wee posse who’ve been through a great experience together. Friendships are forged at their shows.  And that’s exactly why they’ve chosen a Firewalk as their fundraising method.

The challenge is that Poorboy can’t apply for funds to take the show to the Edinburgh Fringe this year – they’ve subsidised the writing and rehearsing of the show in Scotland and New York and have a venue supporting them on the Royal Mile, right at the heart of the Fringe – the lovely Scottish Storytelling Centre. Although they have the work complete, and the passion and commitment behind the project – they just don’t have the funds to stage the work.

Poorboy feel that a Firewalk is a little like one of their shows – you turn up with a few people you know and a pile of strangers and by the end the night you’ve done something amazing, feel connected to the world and each other and leave knowing you’ve done a great thing that makes you feel alive with a great bunch of people.

So will you walk through fire with them? They have a fundraising minimum of £320 per participant to cover their firewalking costs and raise the money they need to stage Pirates and Mermaids. They’ve managed to set the amount at this sum after already getting a generous amount of help from Lendrick Lodge.

Poorboy will set you up a justgiving webpage to manage your sponsorship – this lets your sponsors go online and donate directly. Or if you’re old school they can provide you with a sponsor form.
