Scottish Jewellery Week – Dundee

We’re delighted to hear Vanilla Ink is launching the inaugural Scottish Jewellery Week 2014, which is being held in Dundee. This 10-day festival in September has been produced in response to and to celebrate the ever-growing jewellery community of Scotland. Featuring a programme of exhibitions, a symposium, city-wide studio tours, a pop-up shop and more, the festival will add to the already vibrant creative scene of Dundee.

SJW will open with Making Jewellery Work a free one-day symposium at Discovery Point in collaboration with The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust. The day promises to be a full schedule of presentations and panel talks looking at the next steps for jewellers at all levels, and the jewellery industry as whole, in Scotland today.

At the heart of the events series is an exhibition showcasing the eight resident Vanilla Inkers’ collections, produced over the course of their year in the studio. Taking over a newly refurbished venue- The Old Flour Mill on Exchange Street- the exhibition will be a pivotal point for the Inkers in launching their professional career. Opening with a catwalk and street party on September 12th, the exhibition will run 12 – 5pm daily through to the 21st of September. It is free and open to the public and comprises the Inkers’ collections, a photography display by What Kristen Saw and a pop-up shop hosted by Tea Green, a selling platform for Scotland’s creative talent to showcase their work. The designers have brought their own unique stamp to the industry, with a wide range of work that will break the traditional definition of ‘Jeweller’.

SJW’s official catering sponsor Avery and Co, will not only provide refreshments and canapés for the first 150 people to arrive for the catwalk and street party, but will also be the host restaurant on the 21st of September for any guests looking to enjoy a relaxing meal following the symposium. Avery and Co are passionate about the food they serve, using only the freshest, natural and (wherever possible) local ingredients.

Picking up the pace for the conclusion of the festival, SJW will present 15 Years at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design’s Main Entrance Gallery. The exhibition, running daily on the 19th and 20th will showcase some of the best and varied graduate Jewellers to come out of the Scottish art colleges over the past 15 years. Visitors will also be given a one-off chance to have a peak in to other Dundee based Jewellers’ private studios. On the 19th and 20th tours will be starting at The Old Flour Mill, visiting a variety of studios around Dundee and concluding at Vanilla Ink, the base of operations.

With such an array of events and exhibitors, through Scottish Jewellery Week 2014, guests are guaranteed to experience a new side to Dundee and discover Jewellers, Artists and new works that they have not encountered previously.
