In The Art School

Whilst studying at university you may often be faced with the dreaded question, “What do you even do?” Whilst this question is often used to grill students on almost any course at university, art students seem to get challenged the most. There seems to be a perception that art students simply draw pictures all day but a group of third year communication design, graphic design and illustration students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) aim to change this by creating In The Art School.

Becca McCann, Mitch Gillies, Laura Geyer and Ellan Rankin are all taking part in a module called Communication Futures which requires that they come up with a group project to create a social media intervention. The task proposed asks the team to explore how a community of designers could share their skills using social media.

Noticing a communication gap between connecting the work of DJCAD students to the local community, the team set about documenting the daily activities of communication design students through interviews and videos. The team want to portray an honest representation of life in the art school to prospective students and first years who are deciding their degree disciplines.

Laura Geyer, a Graphic Design student taking part in the project said: “An art school degree is such a different experience to other courses, and there is a lot of mystery surrounding what we do everyday. So by bombarding social media with these videos we’re hoping to both confirm and deny the stereotypes that we just doodle all the time.”

Follow the project and watch their videos on social media.
