Events Programme Announced for Katy Dove Exhibition at DCA

Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) has announced the events programme accompanying its exhibition of work by Katy Dove (1970 – 2015) beginning this month.

Katy created meditative spaces through her combinations of sound and image, and contemplative responses to colour and rhythm, creating colourful paintings, drawings, prints and animations. The events programme for the exhibition begins with the Exhibition Preview on Friday 16 September from 7pm, where visitors can be the first to view a selection of work from throughout Dove’s career.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 20 November 2016 and is programmed in partnership with Discovery Film Festival, Scotland’s international film festival for young audiences, held annually at DCA. Dove was very interested in presenting her work to younger audiences, finding children to be especially receptive to it.

On Sunday 6 November DCA will present an afternoon concert of acoustic psychedelia, folk and jazz in their galleries with Sound of Yell’s Stevie Jones. Jones’ versatility and fluency across several instruments places him among the most sought-after collaborators in Scottish music and for this special concert he has pulled together a group of musicians to perform in the galleries.

The performance theme continues with dance artist and educator Sheila MacDougall, who collaborated with Katy on several occasions. Sheila will formulate her response to the work on show throughout the exhibition, culminating in a one-off dance response in the galleries on Thursday 17 November. Thursday 10 November will see the return of DCA’s popular (((echo))) event, with local artists responding to the work on show.

For younger visitors, Family Art Lab on Sunday 30 October will give visitors the chance to create short animations inspired by Katy Dove, Len Lye and Norman McLaren by scratching, drawing and colouring directly onto old 16mm film stock before seeing it projected onto a screen.

On selected Saturdays throughout the exhibition, Art Cart will also be available for a colour and shape treasure hunt and badge making inspired by the exhibition. DCA Activity Room will also be open daily throughout the exhibition, unless being used for a workshop.

A Senior Citizen Kane gallery tour and workshop will be held on Tue 4 October for visitors aged 60+, where they can join a member of the DCA team for a tour and take part in a creative workshop.

Graham Domke, Exhibitions Curator at DCA, said: “The exhibition will celebrate the joy and wonder that Katy Dove’s work and life brought to the people who came in to contact with them. Dove is greatly missed and these exhibitions are being produced with the assistance of the artist’s family and friends.”

To coincide with the exhibitions, DCA has also selected a range of short Len Lye films to be shown in DCA Cinema, details of which are to be announced soon.
