Creative Dundee

February Make/Share: Sustainable Making

Venue: The Beer Kitchen Dundee // Date: February 13 // Time: 7-8:30pm

Make/Share is a free monthly event which brings people together to gain a behind the scenes insight into their creative processes, held on the second Tuesday of each month, at The Beer Kitchen Dundee, from 7pm – 8.30pm.

Join us on Tuesday February 13th and hear short talks by four local makers about the processes behind turning their ideas into reality, and how living and working in Dundee influences their work. The theme for this month is ‘Sustainable Making’.

Speakers explore how their project or product has evolved, how they experiment, what their biggest challenges have been and how they were overcome. After the talks we have a short opportunity for any questions to the speakers, and for you to share your upcoming events with the group.

We’re delighted that The Beer Kitchen is our official sponsor venue for Make/Share and supports the event with a complementary beer or soft drink at arrival. Also, exclusively for Make/Share attendees, after 5pm you can claim a 10% on any food or drink at the Beet Kitchen!

You don’t need to sign up, just come along!

Speakers this month include:

Darryl Gaffney du Plooy

Darryl is co-founder and director of Uppertunity – a local social enterprise that provides community based activities and personal development programmes for adults with learning disabilities and additional support needs. He’ll talk about their enterprise, where it came from, what they do and their plans for the future. Sustainability is a continual challenge for them, not only for achieving financial security, but also for empowering stakeholders to contribute in moving Uppertunity forward. As first time entrepreneurs, their journey is like following a path into a dark cave with only a kinetic torch and the echo of their own voice to find the route out. Rebecca Williamson

Rebecca is a recent Product Design graduate at DJCAD. While natural resources are in decline, the population is surging. To sustain food production, we must recognise how urban land can be used more efficiently. Although few people engage with growing, the future of food requires widespread participation from communities and individuals. Combining nature with technology, Rebecca created an automated system that enables people to grow, harvest and consume food within the home. Shirley Lowe

Shirley is a current 4th year jewellery and metal design student at DJCAD. The jewellery making industry relies on natural resources, the extraction of these natural resources is destructive, to say the least. Shirley is creating pieces for her degree show in May using recycled and reclaimed materials, she is also reducing the use of harmful chemicals in workshop. This line of work has led to her becoming an Ambassador for Ethical Making for the Incorporation of Goldsmiths, to liaise between the incorporation and the jewellery department to implement change. Michael Findlater

Mike is an Architectural Designer and Director of his own design studio. Since graduating in 2013 from the University of Dundee he has worked in both the design and physical construction of timber buildings across Scotland. In recent years he has been collaborating with an off site modular construction company whilst also exploring small scale carpentry projects of his own. His talk will cover some selected projects and the importance of understanding the nature of the materials and the process of making at large and small scale.
