Sculpture in the City – Celebrating Public Art in Dundee

A new exhibition from Sharing Not Hoarding (at Slessor Gardens) features photographs of public sculptures in Dundee, taken by members of the Menzieshill Photography Group and other volunteers. The photography is part of a major public art recording project led by the University of Dundee Museum Services in association with Art UK and Scotland’s Urban Past and will be exhibited until 2nd November 2018.

Dundee has an excellent collection of over 400 pieces of public art, including murals, mosaics, stained glass and street furniture. Nearly half of these works are sculptures, which are currently being catalogued as part of a UK-wide project, Art UK Sculpture.

Matthew Jarron, curator of the University of Dundee Museum Services said: “There are so many wonderful artworks around the city, and very often we just walk past them without noticing. This recording project has been a great way of focusing attention on the amazing art we have all around us, and we hope to continue promoting it in other ways in the future. As our images are all of public art, what better place to exhibit them than in this outdoor exhibition space which is itself a unique form of public art!

If you’d like to get involved in documenting Dundee’s public art please contact Matthew Jarron, Curator of University of Dundee Museum Services. You can also keep up with the project via Facebook.
