Amps Community Ideas Fund: The Winners!

We’re happy to report another excellent Amps Annual Forum! Thanks to Amina – the Muslim Women’s Resource Centre for the delicious bites and a massive well done to those who pitched their project on the night.

We’re also delighted to let you know that Connor Finlayson and Ryan McLeod have been awarded this year’s Community Ideas Fund – a given amount of funding (50% of all Amps subscriptions, a total of £1,500 this year) which is awarded each year to a chosen project originated from a collaboration between two or more individuals who are part of Amps. All Amps were invited to vote on the night – physically and virtually – for their favourite project. Read some insights into Connor and Ryan’s project below.

About the awardees:

Connor Finlayson is a local designer and student who runs @typedundee on Instagram, capturing serendipitous type from the nooks & crannies of Dundee. Ryan McLeod is one half of design studio Agency of None and has worked on a range of creative projects including the Open/Close Dundee street art tours.

The project in one sentence:

The Typography Treasure Hunt event aims to teach the basics of typography in a fun way by sending people onto the streets of Dundee. In teams, you’ll be able to explore the city centre of Dundee solving the clues to find pieces of typography for your answers. There will also be prizes for the best performing teams.

The Impact of the Project:

In the duo’s words: “As a UNESCO City of Design, we have a responsibility to showcase great design but also help residents and visitors discover and understand more about design. Typography is one of the cornerstones of design and we want to celebrate some of the amazing examples in Dundee’s city centre.

The Typography Treasure Hunt event is aimed at residents and visitors to the city who are interested in learning about design but aren’t necessarily designers themselves. By teaching some basic design principles in a fun way it will help people understand the decisions designers make. We are surrounded by typography every day and we hope the event will make people look at it differently and question how they use it themselves, whether that’s in In Design or Microsoft Word.

Thanks again to our Amps for their support and good luck to Connor and Ryan!

We’re really excited to make the Typography Treasure Hunt happen with the support of the Amps fund. We feel as a Unesco City of Design there should be more opportunities for everyone to get more hands-on with design in a fun way. Hopefully, with this new collaboration, we can help people look at the city differently and learn some of the basics of typography no what their background is.
