We wanted to take this timely opportunity to highlight Tracey Smith‘s great illustration work. Tracey is one of seven short-listed illustrators who has beaten hundreds of other artists to secure a place in Waterstone’s Picture This 2011 – Waterstone’s nationwide hunt to discover the next big name in illustration.
Back in June, the bookseller invited readers to vote for a favourite fairy tale that they would like to see brought to life by Michael Morpurgo, one of the world’s best storytellers and former Children’s Laureate. Over 1,000 people voted for the winner – the fantastical and magical Beauty and the Beast.
Aspiring children’s book authors were then invited to submit their interpretations of how the main characters would look, alongside a scene from the much-loved fairy tale. The winner will receive an exciting publishing contract to illustrate Morpurgo’s story in 2012.
Tracey who is based in Newport, graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2008, with a First Class BA [Hons] in Illustration. As a freelance illustrator she is currently working with the McManus Museum & Galleries in Dundee, where she is part of the Creative Learning team.
The winning illustrator will be selected next month; and as the only Scottish based illustrator in the shortlist whose work we admire, we wish Tracey all the very best!
