The Fish of Knowledge

There’s something fishy going on at Hospitalfield as artist Zoe Gibson unveils a new sculpture created in collaboration with Primary 7s from across Arbroath.

For Hospitalfield’s 2022 Children’s Graduation Art Work, Dundee-based artist Zoe Gibson has worked with 400 children from schools in Arbroath to each design, make, and contribute a fish scale to create a giant sculpture titled The Fish of Knowledge.

Conceived by Gibson, the fish takes inspiration from Arbroath’s proximity to the sea and fishing heritage, as well as the mythical and historical imagery on Pictish stones in and around Angus. Each scale reflects the young person’s personality, and assembled together they form a collectively made artwork.

You’ll find the giant (and exceptionally knowledgeable) fish in the Hospitalfield paddock until August.

Hospitalfield’s Annual Graduation Art Work is made with every pupil from Timmergreens and Muirfield Primary Schools in Arbroath, and celebrates the move of Primary 7 children onto their secondary schools. Previously taking the form of a procession, the project joins the schools together in creativity, feeling a sense of pride for Arbroath, and embracing the exciting move up to secondary school.
