Apply for ScrapAntics’ £10,000 commission for a new public art sculpture in the University of Dundee Botanic Garden!

ScrapAntics are looking for an artist to design, create and install a public art sculpture in the University of Dundee Botanic Garden, to promote awareness and understanding of climate change.

The theme of the project is sustainability and the sculpture must encourage engagement and understanding with one or more of four key topics: energy, transport, waste/circular economy and resilience. The sculpture will be permanent and must be interactive, thought-provoking and playful, engaging not only children but adults as well.

Community engagement will be vital to the project and four local schools must be involved through a series of creative workshops which must be considered as part of the application process.

ScrapAntics would love for you to ‘think big’ for the sculpture with no size limitations in place and a number of fallen trees from the garden available as materials!

The Dundee City Council Sustainability & Climate Change Team and ScrapAntics will shortlist five entries, which will then go to an anonymous public vote, before creation and installation of the sculpture begins spring 2023.

£10,000 to be inclusive of all artist’s time, costs and expenses

Submissions should be sent to kate@scrapantics.co.uk as three separate documents per the below instructions:

• Submission requirements
  • Your name and contact details
  • A statement on your understanding of sustainability in relation to creative projects / practice
  • Confirmation of whether you have visited the Botanic Garden to assess the space
  • Your chosen site for the sculpture or an indication of your flexibility on site location within the Botanic Garden
  • An outline on the number and content of the school workshops you aim to deliver
  • An approximate outline of how the budget will be spent
  • An explanation of the risks to the public from your sculpture and how they will be mitigated

• Project proposal
  • PDF format
  • No more than 2 x A4 pages
  • A written description alongside artist’s sketches, photographs, inspiration images

• CV
  • PDF format
  • No more than 1 x A4 page
  • An outline of relevant experience/past work

Five shortlisted entires will be announced and put to an anonymous public vote Thursday 9 February 2023.
