Creative Dundee

Scottish Dance Theatre L-E-V Dance collaboration tour comes to Dundee

The world premiere of Process Day, from internationally renowned choreographer Sharon Eyal and techno producer Gai Behar, kicks off in Dundee this month before making it’s way to Edinburgh.

Presented as a double bill with Anton Lachky’s Dreamers, this new international performance from Scotland’s leading contemporary dance company, as part of their 30th year of events, sees them collaborate with Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar. The creative duo are responsible for a stream of critically acclaimed, original work with the world’s leading dance companies including Batsheva Dance, Nederlands Dans Theater and Carte Blanche. They come fresh from their latest collaboration OCD Love (performed in Tel Aviv, October 2015).

Inspired by Tirzah and Micachu’s track I’m Not Dancing (from Berlin based music collective Greco-Roman), Process Day is a sleek take on fresh dance from world leaders Sharon and Gai. The dancers will surrender to a techno score from collaborating composer and DJ Ori Lichtik, whose clubbing credentials will be felt throughout the theatres the company visits. Sharon’s inspiration comes from over twenty years dancing and choreographing for world leaders Batsheva and her movement is singularly personal and emotional (‘LEV’ means heart in Hebrew). With an inherent sense of the future, Process Day is otherworldly, surreal and animalistic in its perfect syncing of techno-inspired minimalism and heart-wrenchingly exciting dance.

Dreamers features in a double bill with Process Day. Anton Lachky is interested in creating a new idea of what reality is and how we define it by making sense from nonsense and exploring links between reality and surrealism. His process starts in meeting the dancers, letting them improvise to discover their personalities and physicality and exaggerating, twisting and shaping these to create physical, cartoon-like caricatures in his unique quirky humorous style. His interest in shaping the body, to create any form you wish it to be, results in a highly physical work. From high speed group movements to intimate duets set to beautiful classical excerpts from Bach, Verdi, Haydn, Chopin and Vanhal, the sheer strength, beauty and power of the dancers is exposed.

Scottish Dance Theatre Artistic Director Fleur Darkin said: “It is a real coup to bring Sharon and her unique band of collaborators to Dundee, a UK first for this world-leading team of dance innovators. Their artistic practice is rooted in a deep and embodied knowledge of the body and their vision of dance – which relies on a parity between music, dance and design – creating sophisticated work that is leading the field and is recognised internationally.”
