The Byre Theatre in St Andrews in partnership with Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland and Perth Theatre are launching a new playwriting award to encourage and support the next generation of playwrights living in Scotland. The award will provide a key opportunity for an emerging playwright to see their first play come to life.
The selected playwright will be receiving a commission with the outcome of a professional production, produced by Perth Theatre. The selected commission will be performed in the main auditoriums of The Byre Theatre and Perth Theatre’s Joan Knight Studio in January 2023.
Two of the shortlisted writers will receive script development workshops and professional support. The selected playwright will receive a commission fee of £7,800 and will be supported throughout the writing process with a residency, mentoring, script development workshops and guidance in dramaturgy.
It is expected that the commissioned play will be for a maximum of four performers and between 60 – 90 minutes.
Applicants must be:
– Resident in Scotland
– Playwrights who have not had their first professional commission of a full-length play
Deadline for applications: 5 pm, Monday 17 January 2022
This award is coordinated by the Byre Theatre in partnership with Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland and Perth Theatre and supported by the University of St Andrews MLitt in Playwriting and Screenwriting.
