These two great Scottish designers, Johanna Basford and Jane Gowans are well known to Creative Dundee, as both started out their careers at DJCAD and Jane is still based in the city. We’re delighted to hear that they’ve joined forces in a special new collaboration for spring…
The ‘ink evangelist’ Johanna Basford, known for her intricate hand drawn illustrations, with clients including Dazed and Confused, Sony Music and Nike, has worked with award-winning jewellery designer Jane Gowans to create a special limited edition bracelet: A single sterling silver bloom on black thread.
Only 100 of the design have been made and each bracelet is accompanied by a pocket-sized Basford print, carrying the numbered edition and signed by both designers. The finishing touch is the delivery envelope, each being hand illustrated by Johanna, making every package completely unique.
Based on the bestselling JG Minis collection of friendship-style bracelets launched by Jane Gowans in November 2013, the collaborative design of the floral motif was sketched out by Johanna and then lifted from the page by Jane. Marrying her design process with Johanna’s, Jane traced over the organic hand drawn lines in wire to create the initial prototypes before the finished piece was cast in sterling silver. Ink transformed into a burnished bloom.
Craftsmanship lies at the heart of this collaboration, highlighting the skill and attention to detail lavished by both designers in their work. Johanna’s individually hand illustrated envelopes echoes Jane’s meticulous hand finishing of each bracelet inside.
The limited edition ‘packages’ are £40 RRP and can be bought online with free UK delivery at www.janegowans.co.uk
