Creative Dundee

September Make/Share: Making in Dundee

Venue: The Beer Kitchen Dundee // Date: September 13 // Time: 7-8:30pm

Make/Share is a free monthly event which brings people together to gain a behind the scenes insight into creative processes, held on the second Wednesday of each month, at The Beer Kitchen Dundee, from 7pm – 8.30pm.

Join us on Wed September 13th and hear short talks by four local makers about the processes behind turning their ideas into reality, and how living and working in Dundee influences their work. The theme for this month is ‘Making in Dundee’.

Speakers explore how their project or product has evolved, how they experiment, what their biggest challenges have been and how they were overcome. After the talks we have a short opportunity for any questions to the speakers, and for you to share your upcoming events with the group.

We’re delighted that The Beer Kitchen is our official sponsor venue for Make/Share and supports the event with a complementary beer or soft drink at arrival. Also, exclusively for Make/Share attendees, after 5pm you can claim a 10% on any food or drink at the Beet Kitchen!

You don’t need to sign up, just come along!

* Please note that as from next month (October 2017) the Make/Share event will happen on the second TUESDAY of each month, same venue!

Speakers this month include:

Laura Darling

Laura is an illustrator and artist-educator whose work is largely guided by procrastination and observational drawing. Her subject matter varies from animals and the natural world to people and built environments (weather dependent). Since 2014 Laura has also worked for Dundee International Women’s Centre and this year joined Dundee Women’s Festival as a Committee member. Laura will chat about the benefits of procrastinating. Accompanied with Prue Watson (who’s chair of Dundee Women’s Festival) Laura will also talk about next year’s Dundee Women’s Festival. Chris Scott

Chris is full time portrait, wedding, commercial and street/documentary photographer – not in that particular order. Jack of all trades trying to master them all. He’s self-taught and what started as a hobby is now more than a full time business in a very competitive industry. Chris is just about to open a state of the art photography studio in Dundee that won’t just be a working hub, but a creative space open to other artists to use. His talk will be on standing out from the very crowded house to be noticed and how to overcome whatever is thrown in your way. Kirsten Manzi

Kirsten is a Dundee based jeweller and 1/3 of Team Make-Off. She is passionate about making and last September started Dundee Mini Make-Off: a small initiative aiming to engage local communities with makers, artists and designers in an effort to increasing arts accessibility and introducing people to the benefits of making. Kirsten will be talking about her own creative practice as well as her journey in setting up Dundee Mini Make-Off and why Dundee is such a great city to be creative in. Russell Pepper

Russell is a renewable energy PhD student who somehow found himself in the world of street art. He has lived in cities with amazing street art and has always loved it; so since moving to Dundee he thought that because Dundee is such a creative city, a street art trail is something which would work really well here, and could get people exploring hidden corners and areas of their city!
