Amps Breakfast Micro-Commissions: Gav Herron

Gav Herron

We invited nine supporters from our Amps community to creatively capture the spirit of Amps Breakfast. This is Gav Herron’s response.

Gav Herron is an illustrator creating bold and fantastical characters and scenarios inspired by retro cartoons, pop culture and the playful worlds of artists including Ward Kimball, James Flora and Leo Timmers. His piece plays on advertorial lures promising a cure for what ails your creative pep—but this one is a proven remedy!

“Simply, my piece represents that post-Amps effect; a recharged, inspired energy to go off and be creative for another week. Mid-century illustration and retro adverts, outlandish claims and all, are a huge inspiration in my work, playing on “Amps Breakfast” was almost a given! In all honesty though, the confidence I have to produce such work comes from the great community we have. Amps was the first place I put myself properly out there as a professional artist, and I’ve been continually welcomed, inspired and encouraged ever since.”

To mark the two year milestone of meeting online each week since March 2020, we asked some Amps to create a piece of work that both reflects their practice and celebrates building community, forming connections, and the joy of Amps Breakfast!

This blog is one of several celebrating Two Years of Virtual Amps Breakfasts. Breakfast is a weekly opportunity that brings together supporters of Creative Dundee’s Amps network to chat and connect. New faces are always welcome—join Amps and come along!
