Spotlight: Makers Gift Guide 2023

For the festive season, we’ve put together a gift guide that makes supporting local makers even easier.

‘Tis the season to shop local and, as ever, it’s the perfect opportunity to support independent businesses and makers in whatever way we’re able to. We’ve pulled together another gift guide with a difference just in time for the festive and market season.

We’ve asked local makers and artists to tell us a bit about one of their products and who they think would love to discover it under their tree, alongside where you can find their work. Each maker has also given us a recommendation or two for other makers to shop with, to help spread the love.

SkeltMilk

Highlighting: The Dens Road Market T-Shirt.

Who’ll love it? I would it recommend for any Dundonians who remember when the implication that getting an item of clothing (or indeed anything) at Dens Road Market was an insult, and those who love the iconic signage originally painted by Ernest Gauld!

Who else should we be shopping with? The Dundee-based makers I’d like to highlight are Josie Donald, Kate Scarlet, and Zoë Gibson!

Shop designs by SkeltMilk directly via their online shop.

Islay Spalding

Shop / Website / Instagram

Highlighting: My Echo Delta Ear Studs.

Who’ll love it? For lovers of geometric jewellery and folk with a fascination for triangles, the oxidised silver Echo Delta Ear Studs make a special Christmas gift. Part of the Delta Dundee collection inspired by Kengo Kuma’s V&A Dundee, these are also a great gift for Dundonians far and wide; a memento of the city.

Who else should we be shopping with? I would recommend one of my studio buddies The Candle Bothy and her Christmas collection of soy wax scented candles to keep your home smelling Christmassy, and also Tayberry Gallery in Perth, run by my sister and fellow jeweller Sarah Spalding, where she sells her work alongside around 50 other independent artists and makers.

Shop Islay’s work via her online shop or find her at the V&A Dundee Festive Design Market, Fri 24–Sun 26 Nov, and the Double Door Studios Festive Boutique, on various dates between Sat 9–Sun 24 Dec.

A brat Bríde is a piece of fabric (or scarf) that is left out during the night on the eve of St Brigid’s day (1st of February). It is said that the saint comes in the night and blesses the scarf, giving it healing properties.
