Last week we shared the outputs of our AHRC Creative Communities research, Creative Space as a Catalyst for Community Wealth Building, in partnership with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at The University of Dundee.
Through this work we position creative communities as valuable partners in Scotland’s Community Wealth Building ambitions and advocate for the creative space infrastructure needed to unlock the potential of creative communities to contribute even more meaningfully to our places and local economies.
During this online event we will bring together cultural organisations, existing creative spaces, national support organisations and decision makers to share the key themes of our research and policy recommendations, exploring these through two discussions:
Cultural Organisations as Community Anchors will discuss cultural organisations’ unique ability to connect people, place and policy as well as what better creative space infrastructure would unlock for creative communities.
From Meanwhile to Long-Term: Creating a Creative Space Ecosystem will explore the challenges and opportunities around existing creative space models and how these might be developed or better supported to foster opportunities for diverse communities and practices.
Together we will think about what support, partnerships and models are needed, how we might collectively advocate for the role of creative communities in Scotland’s future, and the infrastructure needed to get there.
11:00–11:25: Welcome & AHRC Creative Communities Findings and Recommendations

Funded by the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and led by Northumbria University, this research has been supported by Creative Communities Community Innovation Practitioner Awards, which represents an investment of almost £500,000 across the UK, catalysing place-based research and innovation in all four nations. Over the past year, six CIPs have worked on live challenges across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, testing approaches that respond to the different economic, cultural and governance contexts of their places.
