Winter Works at the McManus

 

The winter exhibition at the McManus Art Gallery and Museum opens today. The collection features etched works by 19th Century artist James McNeil Whistler. This exhibition coincides with the launch of ‘Connecting Whistler’  Glasgow University’s online collection by Professor Margaret F. MacDonald is a compilation of essays which feature connections to the artist.

Whistler created over 490 etchings over his lifetime; as a trained topographical draughtsman, his work is skilled and precise. Some of Whistler’s etching works depict portraits of family and intimate street scenes in London and Venice. The evolution of each etching from the copper plate through different states to the final print is can be viewed at Glasgow University’s catalogue here.
