To mark the end of the exhibition Coded After Lovelace, the Hannah Maclure Centre team are giving you one more chance to see the works and get to know the artists, by participating in their art+feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon; an international campaign to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia.
Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.
As part of the Art+Feminism campaign to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia, Hannah Maclure Centre at the University of Abertay are hosting an edit-a-thon meetup. The event will focus on expanding or improving Wikipedia entries for women artists working in new media, particularly those associated with the exhibition Coded After Lovelace. Activities will also include new editor orientation and training. Snacks will be provided!
Artists they will be looking at and adding to Wikipedia include:
Carla Gannis, Claudia Hart, Olia Lialina, Rosa Menkman, Erica Scourti, Lorna Mills, Cornelia Sollfrank and Kate Rich (Bureau of Inverse Technology (BIT))
