An additional Talent Show this week showcases the talents of Dundee based Ruby Loves Red (AKA Sandra Cassidy).
Ever since graduating in 2000 with a degree in Illustration & Printmaking from DOJ, Sandra has been in full time employment but has continued to dabble in the creative arts designing cards and paintings to sell at Arts & Craft fairs.
Ruby Loves Red (named after a book designed by Sandra for her degree show) was born February 2009. It all started with a lazy Sunday trip out for coffee and cake to
Borders in Dundee and a chance meeting with the book “Aranzi Cute
Dolls” by Aranzi Aronzo. Sandra swiftly bought the book along with “Plush
You!” by Kristen Rask and proceeded to cut up all her old clothes as soon as she got home…
Armed with her brand spanking new sewing machine, a present for her birthday, she started sewing a few stuffed toys, following basic patterns from a couple of books, before deciding to develop her own patterns and designs. Ruby loves Red has been in development ever since…
Sandra designs all of her own patterns for toys, key-rings and puppets herself. Every design has it’s own individual style using a combination of vintage, Japanese and up-cycled cloths. They are all sewn on the machine, stuffed and then hand sewn to finish.
The website launched soon after the Ruby Loves Red conception in late February. Designed and built by her talented husband/web designer/all round good guy Danny Cassidy it provides Sandra with an online presence to promote her own work, discuss influences and showcase new projects.
The wonderfully colourful creations can currently be bought online from Etsy but Sandra hopes to have a shop facility in place on the site in the near future.
Ruby Loves Red will be participating in the St Andrews Arts & Crafts Fair in the town hall on Saturday 7th November from 10-4. Put that one in your diary and be sure to go and check it out and support local Dundee talent. Keep up the good work Sandra!
