Philip Howard trained at the Royal Court Theatre under Max Stafford-Clark on the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme, 1988-90. He was Associate Director at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, from 1993-6, before becoming the Traverse’s longest-serving Artistic Director between 1996-2008.
