It’s that time of year again, Christmas adverts are appearing on our TV screens and we’re all starting to think about what to buy for our loved ones. The realisation that it’s only a few weeks until Christmas is starting to settle in and you have the sudden urge to charge down the high street grabbing everything you can see. There’s so many great independent designers and retailers in Dundee but you don’t know where to begin looking.
Don’t panic! We’ve put together a list of all the markets, events and pop-ups happening across the city which provide the perfect opportunity to buy something a bit unique for your loved ones, your teacher, your boss (and maybe even your dog!) whilst supporting the local economy.
Also don’t forget about Small Business Saturday on 5th December – take this opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts from independent retailers and designers based in Dundee. The streets around City Square will become the focus for Dundee’s first ever Dundee Christmas Street Festival. From Reform Street to the Murraygate, Wellgate to Shore Terrace, many of Dundee’s historic and well-trodden streets will play their part in staging a magical moment in 2015. Alongside the festival of fun and late-night shopping, one of the evenings most popular highlights is the grand fireworks finale when mini Luke Skywalkers, Darth Vadar’s and Princess Leah’s are invited to gather in celebration of the soundtrack selected to accompany this years fireworks display. This winter Dundee Contemporary Arts are super excited to be hosting their annual festive market CRAFTED on Saturday 5th December. This special event brings together over 30 specially selected makers from across Scotland presenting some of the best contemporary independent jewellery, ceramics, textiles, illustration, print and homeware. This is a great opportunity to escape the December high street, discover the work of talented Scottish based makers and choose beautifully crafted gifts that can be cherished year after year. Don’t miss out on a fantastic Christmas Market in the former Westport Gallery and the switch on of Westport Christmas tree’s lights. In addition to the pop-up market, The Parlour Cafe will host a second hand book sale with a hot chocolate bar, fresh waffles and apple pie available to warm up attendees. In Johnston’s Lane (where Spex Pistols is) you’ll be able to purchase Christmas Tree’s while Dundee Rep Theatre will be host to a window spotting competition with the brilliant prize of a Family ticket to their production of The Witches by Roald Dahl. Kerrie Aldo – 5th December
Kerrie Aldo designed the exclusive Crazy Cat Lady tote bag for Time Boutique this spring and her bags have been a permanent feature in the store since. Fashion designer, Kerrie works on bespoke waxed cotton coats and has recently branched out to t-shirts and hats. Kerrie will be bringing along her new collection available to purchase on the day. Kirsten Manzi – 12th December
Kirsten, a Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design Graduate, is growing her collection. She is a regular at national markets and pop-ups. Her jewellery is designed and handmade in Dundee. Kirsten is inspired by architecture and geometric shapes that are reflected in her structured, delicate silver pieces. Click here for more info.
As part of the West End Christmas Fortnight, there will be a Christmas Carnaby held at Roseangle Cafe on the 5th December packed full with quality traders. You never know what you might find!
