Dundee Soup is a new event for the city which gives micro grants to local community based projects to make ideas a reality, over a simple supper dinner. The first Dundee Soup will take place on Wednesday 26 April 2017 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at The Circle.
UPDATE: Lifegate Tea Dance, who provide a place for older people to gather and socialise, was the first winner of Dundee Soup’s micro community grant of £188. Read more in this news release here. Three other groups – Dundee Dressed Herrings, Uppertunity Community Garden and Flow! Kids also took part in presenting their ideas on the evening. Huge thanks goes to everyone who came along and contributed donations to the first event.
The first SOUP was developed in Detroit in 2010 with a group of artists’ friends gathered around a dinner to share ideas about art challenges, finding innovative solutions and imperfect ideas for projects that were hard to discover funding for. Over the years, Detroit SOUP has moved from funding artists to a wide variety of community members that need a little money to start their projects and the challenging ideas pushed people to think about the city in different ways.
For a suggested donation of £5, attendees receive a simple soup supper and hear up to four short presentations from local people running community projects. These can range from art, urban agriculture, social justice, social entrepreneurs, education, technology and much more. At the end of the night, everyone votes on their preferred project, the ballots are counted and winner goes home with ALL of the money raised on the night to develop their project! Winners come back to a future Dundee Soup dinner to report on their project’s progress.
The format is simple – up to:
Dundee Soup dinners are open to anyone: whether you need help for an idea that could benefit the Dundee community or whether you want to support a local community-based project.
