Imagination: Scotland’s Festival of Ideas

Venue: Verdant Works // Date: March 24th // Times: 11am-1pm // Bookings

We live in bewildering, challenging and perplexing times – culturally as well as in every other respect. This is an ideal time to hold a set of cultural events and conversations in Dundee under the banner of Imagination: Scotland’s Festival of Ideas.

The first event on Saturday March 24th at Verdant Works looks at who and what is missing from culture in Scotland, ranging across people, social groups, voices and perspectives.

Speakers include the award winning writer James Robertson, who has just published a biography of Dundee-born musician Michael Marra, ‘Arrest This Moment’; the Bulgarian born Kapka Kassabova, author of ‘Border: A Journey to the Edge of Europe’ which won the Saltire Society non-fiction book of the year; the writer Madeleine Bunting; and the architect Ambrose Gillick – introduced by writer and commentator Gerry Hassan.

The event aims not to have all the answers but to begin a conversation – asking what is particularly Scottish about what and who is missing, what are the wider international and universal reflections, and what if anything can we do in the face of powerful forces from globalisation to corporate power and the rise of populism. We aim to be thoughtful and to have an enjoyable, enriching conversation – one as far removed from official stories of the country and the future as possible.

Imagination: Scotland’s Festival of Ideas at Verdant Works, Dundee, 11am-1pm: Tickets available – and limited by venue size so advance booking strongly recommended.
