Reclaim the streets! This November, take part in a global campaign that raises awareness and takes action against all gender based violence!

Now in its 30th Year, the worldwide campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence will run from 25 November to 10 December with a programme of activities that aims to create awareness and promote action towards ending gender-based violence.

With a big focus on craftivism – a gentle but powerful form of activism, this year there are many opportunities to get involved. Through a series of events, talks, workshops and gatherings, everyone in Dundee is invited to take part in the conversation.

These events, workshops and gatherings will take place between 1 and 24 November, to prepare for the Reclaim The Night March on 25 November. A further series of talks and workshops carries on the conversation between 4 and 10 December.

Create

Get down to the V&A Dundee on 1 November for some Placard Making with Errin Mathieson, open to everyone you can create a sign with a supportive slogan or hashtag to hold up high at the march or place in your window. The following week on 8 November decorate a plain white T-shirt with powerful words to match your placard with Eilidh Warnock. Both events are in partnership with the Women’s Rape And Sexual Abuse Center (WRASAC).

Say it Loud, create a banner with a loud and powerful message at Dundee Contemporary Arts on 18 November. Say it louder with a big craftivism session at Scrapantics on 23 November, which will include how to make a DIY megaphone. For the young activists out there, Hot Chocolate Trust will be hosting a youth craftivism session on 18 November at the steeple church, open to anyone ages 12 – 21, no booking is necessary.

In partnership with Dundee International Women’s Centre, artist Joanna Craig will be hosting a bag making workshop on 24 November leading to a collaborative outdoor artwork in Baxter Park on 6 December.

Listen

On 27 November, get on up to GENERATORprojects for a Feminist Songwriting workshop with local solo musician, Be Charlotte. At the same location on 4 December, you can hear artist and curator Hayley Whelan talking about a recent project surrounding the safety of women and how they navigate our streets.

If you can’t make it to any of these events in person, Errin Mathieson and the WRASAC will also be delivering an online session on mental health in relation to gender-based violence sharing ways to reduce stigma surrounding mental health with sensitivity and care.

Act

Keys To A Safer Future/Unlock Our Fists supported by WRASAC invites the public to write a message on a tag and tie it with a key to the Waterfront fencing. This action recognises how common it is for women to carry keys in their fists out of fear, helping women to reclaim their rights to walk alone.

The 16 Days Of Activism will culminate at 6:30 pm on 10 December where the public are encouraged to shine a light for all of those who have suffered the effects of gender-based violence. You can do this from home or join in person at the City Square.

To coincide with lighting up Dundee, Oor Fierce Girls have choreographed a Flashmob performance. Designed to include people with all levels of mobility, you can learn the choreography through written or video instructions.

Make sure to have a look at the craftivism toolkit, created to help you reclaim the night from home or host your own craftivism workshops.

This thoughtful and generous offering has been made possible by the Dundee Violence Against Women Partnership – which has been working hard to bring the people of Dundee opportunities to listen, create, dance and march in solidarity.

Some places are limited so please have a look at the full programme to find out how to book.
