Pecha Kucha Night Dundee, hosted by Creative Dundee, is a special night out, which now takes place in over 1,100 cities around the world. Dundee hosts the UK’s largest PKN and we’re excited to be at The Caird Hall for the first time, during Dundee Design Festival 2019!
Pecha Kucha Night was BSL interpreted by Linda Duncan and Jennifer Ramsay positioned stage right. The venue was also fully accessible with space for wheelchair users and their friends/family/helper to sit together. For more, see Caird Hall’s accessibility guide.
It’s a simple quick-fire format – speakers show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. Each person chooses their own topic – their work, their loves, hobbies or holidays. The night is a great way for people to meet and hear inspiring activities happening locally across Dundee and beyond. Always diverse and entertaining, there is something for everyone at this event which started in Tokyo in 2003 and has now grown into a global phenomenon!
Creative Dundee supports creative talent to base, grow and sustain their practice in and around Dundee, by connecting and amplifying the city’s creativity. Find out more and watch all previous talks here.
A huge thanks to Fraser Robertson for the incredible PKN artwork. Check out more from him here.

In 2011, she stepped away from a 20-year academic career at the University of Dundee with the goal of helping the public to share in her fascination. If emotional connection shapes our health, our happiness and our very biology, that means we need to put relationships at the heart of our communities and our politics. In the last 8 years, Suzanne has spoken to over 50,000 people, along the way emerging as one of the leading voices in the grassroots movement for Scotland to become an ACE-Aware Nation (Adverse Childhood Experiences). She’ll tell us why she thinks this vision is an idea whose time has come — and why she truly believes that Scotland has a chance to put the power of compassion on the global map. @suzannezeedyk

Signed Songs Are Us are a Deaf-led choir based in Dundee. The choir was established in 2013 when Gerry Hughes opened Tayside Deaf Hub. Members of the Deaf community decided to translate songs into a visual BSL performance for Gerry, who had successfully sailed single-handedly around the world. The founding members were a strong Deaf BSL choir, cued by a hearing interpreter. The choir successfully performed across Dundee and Scotland, with an appearance at the Commonwealth Games. In recent years the Deaf choir has welcomed new members and extended this welcome to Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and hearing people alike. The choir remains Deaf led and songs are translated by the choir members to produce a visually enchanting performance in British Sign Language. In 2017 it was the only Deaf choir from Scotland to take part in the first National Deaf Choir Competition, held in Nottingham, returning with a bronze award. The choir returned to England in 2018 to compete again along with performances at both Dundee and Perth’s first Pride celebrations. This year Signed Songs Are Us were honoured to be hosting the National Deaf Choir Competition 2019 in Dundee!

Being a UNESCO City of Design and coolest city in Scotland is a great restart but, does it matter if the benefits aren’t felt by those who need it most? I will suggest a couple of ideas that could create deeper dialogue and foster wider optimism about the about the potential from redeveloping Dundee. @DDuPlooy
