Our afternoon will continue to centre community, collective action and connecting with our place. Along with our project partners, we’re delighted to invite you to the Dandelion Harvest on Sat 10 September 2022 in Fairmuir Park.
Dandelion Harvest is free and family friendly, with fairness at its core. Inspired by the historic fair held in Fairmuir, the word ‘fair’ stems from feriae, Latin for days of holiday, rest and feasting. This afternoon event is a chance to take part in creative workshops, enjoy good company and come together to imagine the future of community-based growing in Dundee.
Over the last few months, Fair Growing Green has been transformed by the team and local people from an unused bowling green into a thriving community growing space to benefit people, pollinators and our environment.
Pop in for a session and take away some fresh ingredients. Everything is free, there’s no need to book, and all are welcome.
Drop in any time for a relaxed afternoon programme of activities which are family friendly and welcoming of all ages.
| Flag Making Session | Design, make and fly your own flag to represent your hopes for the future of our planet or for sheer enjoyment with multidisciplinary artist, Rhona Jack. |
| Loose Parts Play | The brilliant ScrapAntics are passionate about play and using loose parts – large, recycled resources that can be played with, built and broken. With tyres, plastic tubes, guttering, ropes, cable reels, wheels, wooden pallets and more, these neglected objects are turned into valuable treasure for learning and discovery. |
| Live Mural Painting | With Open/Close Dundee, watch Zofia Chamienia and Lauren Morsely transform the little building beside Fair Growing Green with a colourful mural inspired by community, growing, biodiversity and what this means to local people. |
| Garden Drawing Space | Pick up a drawing worksheet, some colourful pencils and a viewfinder and join illustrator Mairi Isla to explore the garden and draw what you find. |
| Musicians in Residence Mingle | A chance to explore the sounds of the garden and make some music with our local Musicians in Residence, Claire Gorman and Mark Urban, who work together as St Kilda Mailboat. |
| Kids Story Tent and Garden Library | Take a pause, have a seat and enjoy our growing library of books on growing, nature and the environment. Our colourful kids tent is a fun hideout that will inspire young ones to get growing, go adventuring and get involved. |
| Tea and Cake | Pick up a free sweet treat from Newport Bakery with brownies, meringues, apple choux and more (vegan and gluten free options available). |
| Soup Bags | Take away a free Soup Bag with fresh seasonal ingredients from Fraser’s Fruit and Veg, with a delicious recipe from his Seasonal Soups book. |
| Fairmuir and Food | Local historian and storyteller, Erin Farley from Dundee Libraries will weave together stories from Fairmuir and local food growing. |
| Community Growing in the City | Throughout this time, you will have the chance to hear from people involved in community growing across the city, hosted by Eilish Victoria of Fair Growing Green: Manuela de los Rios of MAXwell Community Garden; Amanda Paladini of Fruit Bowls Community Garden; Gisela de la Espada of Victoria Gardens; Kate Treharne of Dundee City Council Community Allotments/Campy Growers; and Jek McAllister of Fair Growing Green. |
| Community Close | Join our Musicians in Residence, Claire Gorman and Mark Urban who will close our event with sounds inspired by our very own Fair Growing Green. |

Location: Fairmuir Park and Green is situated in the Coldside area of Dundee. The garden is close to Dundee & Angus College, Old Glamis Road campus, and minutes from the Kingsway and Strathmartine Road roundabout. Free parking is available.

Access: Fair Growing Green will have toilet facilities on site for the Dandelion Harvest, including an accessible toilet. The garden is paved on all four sides of the main green; the path on the west side of the garden is currently partially covered by foliage. The main green is a relatively level surface of grass and features a drop from the paths, and is accessible via two custom-built ramps and two sets of steps with a handrail.
The Fair Growing Green Unexpected Garden is created and delivered in collaboration by: University of Dundee project team Mel Woods, Tania Kovats, Jek McAllister and Jack Fletcher; Creative Dundee’s Gillian Easson and Eilish Victoria; and Musicians in Residence St. Kilda Mailboat (Claire Gorman and Mark Urban); in partnership with Claire Dow and the Events, Greenspace and Neighbourhood Teams at Dundee City Council; and Friends of Fairmuir Community Group.
