A practical work base for designers and makers to work from and share their practice with other creative practitioners and festival visitors.
For Dundee Design Festival (25th-29th May 2017), Creative Dundee invites anyone who is interested in creative working and who wants to find out more about the design process, to take part in WRKSHP – a dedicated workspace, maker studio and demonstration area temporarily installed in Gallery 1, West Ward Works on Guthrie Street, Dundee, for the duration of the Festival, open daily 10am-5pm.
WRKSHP will feature a programme of practical workshops and demos by designers and makers (full programme here) as well as providing workbenches and desktops for shared working. There will also be shelves packed with resources, materials, tools and machines that visitors are invited to delve into and start making. So whether your tool is a laptop or a lathe, a sketchbook or soldering iron, or if you just need space to try new things out, then just bring what you need and join us there.
A range of traditional and digital fabrication equipment provided by MAKLab will be available on site to learn about and experiment with 3D-printing, laser-cutting, milling and casting. With experienced studio technicians on hand, visitors can get right up close to the design and fabrication process and make almost anything.
Creative Dundee is also bringing their regular Make/Share event to the Festival. Make/Share brings people together to hear behind-the-scenes insights into the work of creative people from a mix of backgrounds. Join a range of speakers for brief insights as they demonstrate their design processes, on Thursday and Friday afternoon every hour, on the hour from noon.

During last year’s festival, Creative Dundee together with Creative Edinburgh produced Mass Assembly, a day-long forum exploring the future of collective working. Mass Assembly brought together those who are part of creative hubs, collectives, networks and clusters from all locations, rural and urban, across Scotland and beyond. The event further confirmed that creatives embrace new ways of working and enjoy doing so in partnership with others.
Building on this year’s festival theme of ‘Factory Floor’, Creative Dundee is running a practical work base for creative people to work from and share their practice with other creative practitioners and festival visitors. Join us and take part in sharing design processes, independent working in a collective space and potential collaborations to emerge.
WRKSHP is co-designed in collaboration with Marsali Miller, a Freelance Designer based in the city and a recent Graduate of the Interior & Environmental Design course at DJCAD (don’t miss the Degree Show 2017!). Marsali previously worked with Creative Dundee on a placement in the beginning of the year, helping the creative organisations based in Unit 5 in the Vision building to redesign their co-working office as ‘a place you want to be’. Read more about this project here.
WRKSHP is kindly sponsored by NCR.
