Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and Architecture Degree Show is always a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar. Last year’s Degree Show attracted a record attendance of 16,000, generating in excess of £1.5 million for the local economy. Around 300 students will once again be showcasing visually stunning art and design that seeks to solve some of society’s biggest problems.
Professor Andrew Atherton, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said, “Dundee is a vibrant city with a thriving cultural sector and our Degree Show taking place at the same time as a major V&A touring exhibition and all the other exciting events scheduled for that week is a major milestone in terms of what the city can offer its residents and visitors.”
For 10 days Matthew and Crawford buildings transform themselves into one of the country’s biggest galleries showcasing the culmination of several years of creative development and hard work.
Several of the students have been immersing themselves in the cultural life in Dundee as they prepare for graduation. Rebecca Foy, an architecture graduate, is one of those who was keenly involved with Creative Dundee via Fabric. She describes her work: “This project presents a new interactive approach between the creative sector and the general public to collaborate and inform the future of urban design and architecture“.
Another graduating student, Graphic Designer Olivia Sharkey discusses her process getting to this stage: “I enjoy working within a strong team and thrive off of collaboration. I think it is important to consider an interdisciplinary approach, as they can often inspire innovation.”
Check out the many thoughtful projects being exhibited between 18 to 26 of May, or go along for the preview on the 17th.
