The Ignorant Art School exhibition and event project returns to Cooper Gallery for Sit-in #4.

Cooper Gallery’s critically acclaimed five-chapter exhibition and event project The Ignorant Art School: Five Sit-ins towards Creative Emancipation returns for its fourth iteration with Sit-in #4: Outside the Circle.

An exhibition and public event series and international symposium inspired by and generated from feminist and queer movements since the beginning of the 20th century, Outside the Circle foregrounds intersectional feminist and queer strategies of radical emancipation, resistance, survival, and collective action as critical and pedagogical ‘ruptures’ in our lived experience.

Inspired by the essential words of African-American writer, feminist and civil rights activist Audre Lorde in her seminal essay ‘The Master’s Tools will Never Dismantle the Master’s House’, the title Outside the Circle is an invitation to witness and participate in a season of radical emancipation, resistance, survival and collective action from both western and Global Majority countries.

The exhibition will run from Fri 18 Oct 2024 – Sat 1 Feb 2025. Join Cooper Gallery on Thu 17 Oct, 5.30–8.30pm, for a preview of the exhibition and collective performance by Art and Design students and lecturers from across Scotland.
